About Ancient Landmark Lodge #3
The actual origins of Freemasonry have been lost in time but it is generally accepted that it developed from ancient stonemasons. In Manitoba it began with the early settlers, with the first meetings recorded in 1864. Ancient Landmark Lodge was founded in Winnipeg in 1872 on dispensation from the Grand Lodge of Canada (Ontario). The Grand Lodge of Manitoba was formed later, in 1875. The first Master of Ancient Landmark Lodge was Worshipful Brother James Henderson. The first two candidates initiated into Masonry in Ancient Landmark Lodge were the Hon. H.J. Clarke, Q.C., Premier and Attorney General, and the Hon. John Norquay, Minister of Public Works, the date of initiation being December 16th, 1872.
During the year 1871, W. Bro. James Henderson, Master of Zetland Lodge #21 in Montreal G.R.C., arrived in Winnipeg, which had a population of about 700. A year later that number had increased to 1000 people! W. Brother Henderson believed that another lodge could be successfully carried on with in the region in addition to Prince Rupert's Lodge #240 G.R.C., which had already been established. Dispensation was eventually granted and the first meeting was held on December 9th 1872. Unfortunately, the Senior and Junior Warden were not available! Bro. A.F. Holland had to leave the district and Bro. W.F. Hyman, while out shooting on December 5th, met with an accident which required the amputation of his right arm!
Our regular meeting is held on the 3rd Monday of each month, September through May. We meet in the Canada Room of the Masonic Memorial Centre, 420 Corydon Ave., in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
